 By Marny Papamatthaiou

An agreement between the Greek government and the European Investment Bank (EIB) on a programme with the exclusive aim of funding research at Greek universities and research institutes, administered by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, will be signed on Friday, 15 July.

The Hellenic Foundation for Research and Technology (ELIDEK) was established recently and will manage 240 million euros in funding from the European Investment Bank and the Greek national Public Investment Programme (PDE). The funds will be utilised between 2016-2018, with disbursement immediately following the signing of the agreement.

Eligible to apply for funding are foundations from the entire nexus of academic and research

institutions. The programme is geared exclusively toward the advancement of research and innovation, with the aim of supporting primarily young researchers, both on the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral level. The objective is to bolster research in Greek academic institutions and research centers.

“The foundation represents an emblematic institutional intervention, with the prospect of continuing after the 2014-2020 period, aiming at fashioning and supporting a long-term and comprehensive national policy on research and technology,” according to a statement from the office of Deputy Minister for Research Costas Fotakis.
